Gloria J Zucaro's "Classes & Studies"

This week for Paint Party Friday http://paintpartyfriday.blogspot.com/ I am showing two different areas of study .  Above is an oil painting study of how to do buildings.  Our instructor was Frankie Johnson at Mainstreet Art Center in Lake Zurich, IL.  http://www.mainstreetartcenter.com  We used Frankie's photos for these studies.
We first toned our background with a washy mix of blue and black acrylic because it dries quickly.
Next we decided on our size and placement of the basic flat front of the building on the left, an old farmhouse.  We measured the height and width, but were free to change them if it would fit our composition better.
With as a few strokes as possible of our oil paints( size #8 flat), we placed the front of the building in but did not make an outline of the building first.
Then the dark right edge of the roof line and the narrow roof showing behind it.
The lower section under the roof on the shadowed side where the small porch extends was put in next in one value lighter than the roof color.  We did not leave room for the porch we just filled the whole area.
On to the bright sunlit roof out to the side, then the wall facing us, which again is another value lighter than the shadow side of the main front part of the structure.  A sliver of the view of the end of the wing of the house.
Then the roof of the porch went in in a value darker than the face of the building because it is a little recessed, but lighter than the front facing side of the wing which is further back and shadowed by the main part of the building.
Darken the inside of the covered porch, lighten a little the front of the porch as it extends back.
Now warm up the face of the house with some yellow, red or orange mixed with white.  Add the windows with a smaller brush.  They can be done with one stroke, and each should be different, having a harder edge here and there, No outlining.
Next we worked on putting different values and colors of the greenery around the building to make it feel nestled.  Frankie emphasized that we should used different sizes and shapes of strokes as well. I think it came out really well!

I won't talk about the smaller building, because the process was basically the same.

My second part is from exercise done for my Dion Dior online watercolor class.
done through the Joggles website

It is using triads.  I really had fun with it and might use these types of designs in my greeting cards.
Happy Paint Party Friday everyone.

Gloria J Zucaro's "Thailand Lunch Cart"

Original Oil on 8"H x 8"W Raymar canvas panel.
SOLD

This painting is for the country of the month of July on the "Virtual Paintout" site  http://virtualpaintout.blogspot.com/  hosted by Bill Guffey.  We traveled to Thailand this month.  I "walked" around Bangkok and found this scene with a lunch cart.
This is also the DPW Challenge http://dailypaintworks.com/Challenges  by Eileen McCoy for this week, which is to paint only in Red, Blue, &Yellow, the primary colors on a color wheel.  I used Ultramarine Blue, Cad Red Medium, and Cad Yellow Medium plus white.  This was very good practice because of the limited palette.  I tried to do this in a very impressionistic way with  a suggestion of things but really no detail.

Gloria J Zucaro Upcoming Shows

Just wanted to let you know I have been juried into" Strokin' IV!", Chicago Pastel Painters Fourth Biennial Juried Member Exhibition.

I also have been accepted into the 2012 Real People show sponsored by the Northwest Area Arts Council and the Old Courthouse Figurative League.

Real People 2012

Celebrating the Arts through Faces and Figures
We're partnering again this year with the Old Court House Figurative League on Real People, our national juried figurative show. The exhibition, held in August & September, serves a dual purpose. The League is able to spotlight figurative artwork with this outstanding exhibition and offer substantial cash prizes totaling more than $1,000 to the artists. Funds from the exhibition also allow the Figurative League to offer a year-round program of life drawing at reasonable rates for members and guests.
Real People is open to all artists and media; submitted work must depict the human form or face in some manner. This show is a national exhibit, drawing artists from across the country.
Real People will be shown in conjunction with two other exhibits of local artists' work, both being annual members' shows: the Workshop for Contemporary Artists and Claymirth, a St. Charles-based ceramics guild. Our GALA TRIPLE ARTISTS' RECEPTION will be held Saturday, August 18th, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the exhibition location, the Old Court House Arts Center in Woodstock.

Gloria J Zucaro's " A New Impression"

6"H x 6"W Original Oil on Raymar Canvas Panel
$35.00 / $7.00 S&H
Click on photo above for more detail

This is my July entry into Ria Hills "Shoot and Paint" challenge.  http://shootandpaint.blogspot.com/  We were to take her photo of the American flag and interpret it in our own way.  Since I was working on a 6 x 6 canvas panel, I decided to change the shape of the impressionistic flag I was going to do.  I first covered the board in a transparent orange.  When it dried I added Indian yellow under the "white" stripes, Alizarin Crimson under the "red" stripes, and Caribbean blue under the star patch.  Then I mixed pools of darks, mediums and lights to mix up both the red stripes and the white stripes.  For the "stars" I used dots of white on the mixed blues background.  This is also my early entry to Paint Party Friday.  http://paintpartyfriday.blogspot.com/  See what Eva & Kristin have going on this week. View the tremendous artwork.  This is also my first of two posts to Jennifer Mclean's The Artist's Playroom. http://www.justaddwatersilly.com/search/label/APR Come by tomorrow to see my second challenge entry.

Gloria J Zucaro's "Treeline"

Original Pastel Painting on La Carte sanded paper
9"H x 12"L
Click on the painting to enlarge for detail.
$75.00/$10.00 S&H

This is my entry into this weeks DPW Challenge, "The Phone Photo Challenge". This is only the top right corner of the reference taken by Elaine Stolt.  We were to crop, change colors and just have fun with it.  So I did!   I tried cropping in several areas and finally decided on the upper right corner. When it enlarged, I could see that the strokes in the filter I used showed the land going in one direction and the strokes for the water going in the other direction. So I decided to do my pastel strokes that way.
